I designed, built and maintained the web site for the Psychology of Programming Interest Group. This included a new registration form for the yearly workshop. I also set up, moderated and administered group's two mailing list.

I later redesigned and rebuilt the web site for the Psychology of Programming Interest Group with the content management system, Drupal. I copied over 25 years of content into new content types. paolability online shop

Personal projects
2004-2013

Designed and built an online jewellery shop from scratch to sell jewellery I make myself. It uses a simple, bespoke CMS. I also built a local admin system to create and manage stock information. My shop accepts and processes orders, directs to PayPal for payments and sends out confirmation mail. I designed and created custom visit logs so that I can see how people use my shop and adjust the user interface as needed. The site also generates an XML file that is used for mailed updates to my shop (via FeedBurner RSS).

Based on long-term usage stats showing visitor paths through my shop, I later redesigned the product detail pages. I removed unused functionality, and redesigned the page for bigger and responsive photos. I also removed a search form to search items by tags and I reworked the shop entrance. Within hours of the update, three items of jewellery were sold.

Refactor a user interface

hotels.com
Contract
2011-2012

I initiated and led the project to audit the hotels.com user interface to identify and reduce unnecessary variation to reduce technical debt and to improve the user experience.

  • I planned and managed the company’s first site-wide project.
  • I enlisted the help of people across the company to ensure a good outcome, from designers and developers to software managers and VPs.
  • I created a paper audit of hotels.com with the Lead UX and UX Manager.
  • I identified and categorised 30 user interface elements using a customer-centred approach.
  • I ran reduction sessions with 25 UX designers, visual designers and front-end developers for each user interface category to choose the best version or to sketch another (e.g., 23 hotel summary variations reduced to one flexible version).
  • I proactively aligned my project with a software refactoring project going on at the same time.
  • I successfully pitched the business case. of a reduced user interface to all five Product Managers and the VP of Product
  • I created a documentation framework for the reduced user interface.

Outcome: I reduced variation in the hotels.com user interface by 91%

Ad-hoc reporting system

Seagram's
Contract

I created an ad hoc reporting system that could also run off the Marketing Planning System and which adapted to changes in the database schema. The user selects time, geography, product and a database field (e.g., volume). The user can swap the positions of time, geography and product on the output, seeing an example of layout on the screen, can add totals in any dimension, remove detail rows, columns or tables and add trend rows. The system then creates a spreadsheet and exports it to Excel so that the user can do analysis and create charts as required.
